A Brief History of Pizza

According to History.com, pizza dates all the way back to the Greek settlement of Naples during the 1700s and 1800s. Heavily populated by working class citizens, society found itself with a problem: the need to feed these poor with affordable and easily consumable food.

In response to this demand, street vendors and casual restaurants began serving up flatbreads covered with toppings, including many of the favorites we know and love today, such as cheese, anchovies, garlic and tomatoes. And so Naples’ earliest incarnation of pizza was born, although historians have also determined that other cultures enjoyed feasting on flatbreads, including the Romans, Greeks, and Egyptians.

It wasn’t until the end of the 1800s, however, that pizza transitioned from a working class meal to a sought-after food. During a visit to Naples following the Italian unification, King Umberto I and Queen Margherita were looking for an alternative to the stuffy French foods upon which they’d been dining during their visit. They were served an assortment of pizzas and fell in love (with the pizzas).

At the same time that pizza was taking over the European continent, it had also immigrated to America, thereby forever changing the face of food in the U.S.
