Pie vs. Cake: A Time-Honored Debate

John Lennon or Paul McCartney? Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings? The Yankees or the Dodgers? These are just a few of the greatest questions of our time. Invariably, people fall firmly into one category or the other, and stand staunchly behind their choice. One more classic contest to add to the list? Pie versus cake. Let’s take a closer look at some statistics related to this dessert debate, along with a few things to keep in mind when deciding which side you’re on.

Pie versus cake

Oprah can’t be wrong with Sweet Lady Jane’s Deep Dish Cherry Pie.

By the Numbers

Statistical analysis firm Data Driven Enterprises (DDE) put the question of pie versus cake to the test. According to their findings, 54 percent of people prefer cake over pie. (Unless you’re a light sleeper, in which case you may be in the 58 percent of people who prefer pie. What does sleep have to do with the question of cake or pie? Your guess is as good as ours!)

Another survey from online survey platform Tellwut backs up DDE’s findings with 60 percent of survey respondents citing preferences for cake over pie.

But is the choice really that clear-cut, or is it more like comparing apples to oranges? Or apple pie to cranberry orange walnut muffins, as the case may be?

The Experts Weigh In

Bon Appetit also weighed in on the great baked goods debate with various pro-pie and pro-cake experts asserting their tasty truths.

The argument for pie? Its humility, honesty, and down-home beauty. Not to mention its unique status as currency in the South, where all incarnations of pie are exalted.

And then there’s the fact that pie making is a skill passed down — in most cases, literally — from hand to hand. Says one pie preferrer, “To make a perfectly socially acceptable … cake these days, you don’t actually need to know much of the art of cake making.”

Those in cake’s corner would obviously beg to differ. So what makes cake the more palatable pick? Its rich cultural and historical significance, along with the role it plays in community and celebrations.

Pie versus cake

Layers upon layers of cake-liciousness.

After all, “One has a wedding cake, not a wedding pie,” and birthdays, which are arguably the most important day of the year — at least for the guest of honor — are traditionally celebrated with cake, not pie.

Factor in the whole cheesecake and cupcake and ice cream cake thing, and the case for cake grows even stronger thanks to its amazing versatility.

What’s an Undecided Person To Do?

Still on the fence regarding whether you prefer cake or pie? Clearly, there’s only one thing to do: sample both to get a clearer understanding of the pie/cake battle. Mail order pies and cakes make it easier than ever to indulge your inner sweet tooth in order to take a side. Or not. Because any way you slice it, there’s no reason you have to love just one or the other when it’s so much more delicious to love them both. Ready to get started on your taste-testing journey?
